Preconception Physiotherapy

Preconception Physiotherapy

Preconception physiotherapy is a personalized approach that prepares your body for pregnancy and birth while you are planning to conceive. The assessment looks at your movement habits, muscle strength, breathing and pelvic floor muscle function. Based on your needs, a program of exercise, breathing, pelvic floor and body awareness work is planned. If you have pelvic pain, bladder or bowel symptoms, or a history of surgery or previous births, the program is tailored around them. The goal is to help you get to know your body better and to support your movement capacity.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy and Manual Therapy Before Pregnancy

Pelvic Floor and Pelvic Region Assessment

A preconception physiotherapy assessment looks at how your pelvic floor muscles contract, relax and coordinate. Breathing and the mobility of the abdomen and pelvis are assessed together with any symptoms you have, such as pain or tension.

Manual Therapy and Uterine Mobilization

Depending on your needs, manual therapy may be applied to the soft tissues of the abdomen and pelvis. The mobility of the uterus and surrounding tissues is assessed, and where appropriate, uterine mobilization and other manual therapy techniques may be added to your physiotherapy plan.

A Physiotherapy Plan Tailored to Preconception

Based on the assessment findings, manual therapy, pelvic floor exercises, and breathing and relaxation work are planned individually for you. The aim is to offer physiotherapy support while you plan a pregnancy by supporting pelvic mobility and pelvic floor function.

Common and Treatable

In its preconception health guidance, ACOG recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week and muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week.

"I'm not sure whether I'm doing my pelvic floor exercises correctly."
"I feel pain during sex, and I'd like support before I get pregnant."
"I'm planning a pregnancy and would like my pelvic floor assessed."

Preconception Physiotherapy FAQ

First, we talk about your health and birth history, your pregnancy plans and any symptoms you have. Then your pelvic floor muscle function, breathing and abdominal–pelvic coordination are assessed, along with any pain or restricted movement in the area. A physiotherapy plan suited to you is created based on the findings.

Manual therapy may be used if the assessment shows a need for it. What it involves is decided by taking into account tension and restricted movement in the pelvic region, as well as your comfort.

Uterine mobilization means assessing the mobility of the uterus and the tissues around it as part of a physiotherapy assessment and, where appropriate, working on them with manual techniques. It is planned according to your individual needs.

No. An internal assessment is only considered if it is needed; the physiotherapist first explains why and how it would be done. Your consent is obtained before it takes place.

Your plan is based on your health history, pelvic floor assessment, symptoms and pregnancy plans. In addition to manual therapy, exercise, breathing and relaxation work are included in the program as needed.
