For Constipation and Difficulty Passing Stool: The “I Love You” Abdominal Massage
Constipation is a common problem that can seriously affect quality of life in both children and adults. Fewer bowel movements, hard stools, and a feeling of incomplete emptying can make daily life difficult. Fortunately, there are simple but effective methods you can use to support bowel movements and make passing stool easier. One of them is the "I Love You" abdominal massage.
What Is the "I Love You" Massage?
The "I Love You" massage is a gentle, rhythmic massage applied by hand to the abdomen, following the direction of the colon. It can help move stool along, especially for people with chronic constipation.
The massage gets its name from the shape of the strokes, which resemble the letters "I", "L", and "U". Each letter targets a different section of the bowel.
How Do You Do the Massage?
Before you start, warm your hands and make sure the person is lying comfortably on their back. Using massage oil or lotion helps the strokes glide more easily.
1. The Letter "I"
Stroke in a straight line from the upper left side of the abdomen down. This movement stimulates the descending colon.
2. The Letter "L" (inverted L)
Massage from under the right ribs across to the left (transverse colon). Then, when you reach the upper left side of the abdomen, stroke downward (descending colon). This movement mimics the path stool takes.
3. The Letter "U"
Starting at the lower right abdomen, follow the entire colon in a U shape: upward (ascending), across (transverse), and downward (descending).
Repeat each movement 5-10 times, gently but rhythmically.
When and How Often Should You Do the Massage?
-
It can be done after waking up in the morning or before bed in the evening.
-
Don't do it right after a meal; ideally, wait until digestion has settled.
-
Regular practice, daily or a few times a week, can bring good results.
What Are the Benefits of the Massage?
